DEAD DEAD DEAD. . .

My dear darling Arthur Hailey died on 25th Nov 2004. He, who was an excellent author, creator of many damn good novels. I shall miss him so much, or maybe not, I wasn't meeting him everyday to miss him now, and of course his books are with me. But yes, now he's not on this Earth anymore. Wish he'd written a few more novels before quitting, I could have done with more.
My fav ones are Airport, Detective, Hotel. And I didn't like The MOneychangers and Overload (a bit of it).
But yes, it does feel sad to know that someone you love, has died. He was 84, and died in his sleep, peacefully I guess.

I thought of posting an ode to the man. But it sort of went into my to-do list and is still there - you beat me to it!

Overload was the first one I read, and I really think its awesome. And if you haven't, you should sample Wheels. Another good read. What I really like about his novels are the characters and the way they are sketched.

Hmm, rightly said.
I have read Wheels, and we talked about it during 2nd yr or so, and of course you liked it, being about cars.
Do you remember that Bakliwal question - a man presses the button for the elevator, and he suddenly says, "Oh my wife is dead!" And we had to guess why he says so. And the answer was - his wife is on a life support sys and there's no power supply. (And then we said there wud be back-up!) So the idea behind writing all this here - I remembered Overload then - there's this paraplegic who needs a life support sys and becoz of power failure she dies.

I hated his books when I was compelled to read "Wheels" in our first year. But I heard that if we read his novels we will know in and out of the industry he is mentioning in that novel. May his soul rest in peace.

Why were you compelled to read Wheels?

Interestingly, even before Bakliwal gave the answer out, I was thinking on those lines, but thought it was too dumb and Bakliwal would tell me I shouldn't overload my brain with novels like the overload!

Actually, I can't fathom all the prejdice against Wheels. Its not about cars. Its the detroit automobile industry which is in focus, or rather how the industry shapes the life and the relationships of people involved. Its about people, more than the cars or the industry per se!

Sudhakar, I know how it is to be *compelled* to read something... its but obvious that you would hate it. Try again, with a fresh mind, i'm sure you'll enjoy it :-)

Dan.. In our first year, the gave us a surprise test in English for 20 marks and who ever gets more than 10 shud read "Wheels" and others shud read "Not a penny more not a penny less". I got more than 10 and I was forced to read "Wheels", as they had marks in all the cycles and first Sem exams. Though it used to be open book test for the novel, I never try this "Wheels". Even without the book I used to attend "Not a penny more not a penny less" only.

K... Everyone (including me) enjoyed reading one page in "Wheels" :) I don't rem the page number. Smitha/Smaraa shud be rem that page number.
